In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in San Francisco; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in California are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. Typical hours are 11 amβ10 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. You can reach Spices at (415) 752-8885; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions. More information is available on its website, smorefood.com.

We just ate here in person and ordered more takeout today. My partner and I are super upset that the bag they gave us broke while we were walking and all our food and leftovers fell on the floor. We carried the bag normally with its handle and it ripped from the bottom. We are quite devastated because this was going to be our meal tomorrow. We are upset they gave us a bag that couldnβt hold the weight of our food. We called in telling them what happened seeing if we could get another meal and come in, but they didnβt understand and told us to order and pay when we get there again. This made us even more sad because we donβt eat out that often, so we were super excited to be able to bring food home. We love this place and order from here all the time. Their food is really good that is why Iβm giving this review a two star instead of one, but the bag ripping was super sad and really affected the way I look at this restaurant.

Got 2 bowls of beef noodle at dinner time, the food is pretty good and the portion is very big for a normal person. What is frustrating is their non-existence service, we have to walk to counter to get the menu ourselves, very slow ordering, very very slow serving time. Even though it is dinner time on a weekday, only less than half of the restaurant is full. We wasted so much time waiting for this bowl of beef noodle, pretty crazy.

I came here for dinner, and this restaurant specializes in Sichuan cuisine, featuring a menu with a wide variety of authentic dishes. I chose some of the most popular items, which were absolutely delicious. The portions are generous, offering enough food to share or take home, as they are quite large. There are some restrictions on dining options; for example, I wanted to order a few hotpot dishes but I couldn't finish eat everything at the restaurant. Nonetheless, I enjoyed my experience and will definitely return for more. The price is good for SF area. Waiters are tentative.

Spices is absolutely amazing. My partner and I went with a friend and ordered the orange chicken, seaweed, braised chicken with chili pepper, and the fish fillet bowl with flaming red oil, and every single dish was bursting with flavor. The orange chicken was crispy and perfectly balanced, the braised chicken had that deep, spicy kick you hope for, and the seaweed was surprisingly flavorful and refreshing. But the standout, without question, was the fish fillet bowl. It came out sizzling hot, coated in a rich, fiery red oil with layers of spice that changed as the dish cooled, every bite felt like a new experience. That said, this is not the place for anyone who canβt handle heat, the food definitely packs some fire. But if you love bold, complex flavors, this is the spot for you. The service was a little lackluster, but the food more than makes up for it. Donβt hesitate to ask for what you need, itβs worth it. Iβll definitely be back. This place is crazy good and absolutely a must-try at least once.
